Career Day was held at the Watson School of Education of UNCW. Jennifer spoke with three groups of students from the Freshman and Sophomore classes about her path in becoming an attorney, the personal fulfillment of her profession, and an honest look into the practice of law. Jennifer enjoyed meeting with the students of Isaac Bear Early College High School and appreciated their thoughtful questions and participation in discussion.

.  Ashley is the President and founding member of the only Eastern North Carolina Collaborative Law practice group, Coastal Collaborative Colleagues, and is a trained collaborative law practitioner.

The Patio Party celebrates the Cape Fear Museum’s opening of the Smithsonian Institution’s traveling exhibit Patios, Pools & the Invention of the American Backyard.

The New Hanover County Community Foundation is affiliated with the North Carolina Community Foundation whose mission is to inspire North Carolinians to make lasting and meaningful contributions to their communities. Noel has served on the Board of the New Hanover County Community Foundation since 2014.

Vivian Howard, restaurateur, award winning author and star of the PBS show "A Chef's Life" discussed her career, lessons learned along the way and plans for her new Wilmington restaurant.  

.  The statewide service project coincides with the NCBA’s 4ALL campaign to provide civil legal aid to those who otherwise would not have access to a lawyer.  WECT provided the location for the Wilmington call center.  Harrison and Ashley appreciated the opportunity to help a wide range of North Carolinians with their legal issues, including questions regarding landlord/tenant law, real estate litigation, business, family and criminal law.

Held at the Wilmington Convention Center, the March 1, 2017 Power Breakfast featured a panel discussion on how marketing and other community efforts can position our region for sustained business growth during and after the Wells Fargo Championship.  The panel included Albert Eckel of Eckel & Vaughah, agency for the Chamber of Commerce’s regional marketing initiative; Kim Hufham of Wilmington and Beaches Convention & Visitors Bureau; Bill Saffo, Mayor of the City of Wilmington; and Woody White, Chairman of the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners.

This year’s symposium covered topics from Fiduciary Litigation to Non-Long Term Care Medicaid Planning.  Ms. Roden attended the Elder and Special Needs Law Section’s Quarterly Council meeting in her capacity as Co-Chair of the Membership Committee of the Elder and Special Needs Law Section.

 

 

Scrivener’s Quill is a Center for Lawyers and Literature.  Mr. Craige discussed the similarities and differences between practicing law in the 21st century and chasing bad guys in the “hard wet rain” world of the hard boiled private detective where justice is elusive and “dead men are heavier than broken hearts.”   The CLE used the novels of Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, and Walter Mosley to examine how their main characters find morality in a world perceived as corrupt and evil.  The group discussed the question “Is the law too weak for justice?” 

Communities in Schools Cape Fear works in partnership with public schools to identify and connect students, many in jeopardy of dropping out, with the community resources they need to stay engaged in school.  It offers programs in area schools and brings community resources, services, parents and volunteers together to help meet students’ needs.  The Healthy Start Breakfast, held at the First Baptist Activity Center, served as a fundraiser for Communities in Schools Cape Fear as well as an educational and enriching experience for everyone in attendance
